Rowland dominates grades like the championship: The e-Formula.news driver rating for the 2025 Tokyo E-Prix

Tim Neuhaus

Tokyo was the scene of two completely different races last weekend. Weather escapades, Pit Boost and daring strategies produced a surprise winner on Saturday in the shape of Stoffel Vandoorne, who was nevertheless unable to prevail in our ratings. On Sunday, there was a thrilling four-way battle for victory, with the protagonists receiving top ratings from the editorial team. Jaguar, on the other hand, probably said goodbye to the title fight for good with a weak performance in Tokyo - especially Mitch Evans.

After each round of Formula E's season 11, our editors award points on a scale between 1 and 10 for all drivers. They are then sorted according to their average rating score. The rating is based exclusively on driving performance, not the potential of the car or external circumstances.

Oliver Rowland | Nissan | 10.0

Oliver Rowland is not only an incredibly consistent driver, but also the consistently best driver in the field. With two pole positions, a win and a second place, he came within a whisker of a perfect weekend. However, when you consider that Rowland only failed to win the first race because Maserati pulled off a stroke of strategic genius, his top score is more than deserved. Rowland's almost 80-point lead after Tokyo is also likely to mean a preliminary decision in the world championship.

Dan Ticktum | Cupra Kiro | 8.8

Was Tokyo finally the breakthrough for Ticktum and Cupra Kiro? There's a good chance, because the pairing already looked very strong in Monaco. Now Ticktum has finally been rewarded with his first Formula E podium. The only mistake the Briton made was the contact with the wall in Sunday qualifying. Without this, he would most likely have also celebrated his first pole position.

As usual, Ticktum drove aggressively and confidently. He made the difference and was able to compensate for any weaknesses of the Cupra Kiro. Overall, it seemed as if both the team and Ticktum himself were currently benefiting from the teamwork - which almost seems like a miracle when you consider the difficult past few seasons. Only David Beckmann has so far been unable to keep up with the up-and-coming Ticktum.

Taylor Barnard | Neom McLaren | 7.8

Taylor Barnard once again surprised everyone in Japan with a magnificent performance. What he maybe lacked in self-confidence in Sao Paulo, he now has more than ever: No one dared to make riskier manoeuvres and overtook more spectacularly in Tokyo. The only downer of his weekend was his crash in the first free practice session. His retirement in the second race in the battle for another podium finish was not his fault.

Flop of the E-Prix: Mitch Evans | Jaguar TCS Racing | 2.4

For a short time, there was hope that Jaguar's podium in Monaco could bring a positive turnaround. After Tokyo, however, Mitch Evans in particular found himself at a new low. He lacked pace again all weekend, but also made two avoidable mistakes. In the first race, he cut the line of Nyck de Vries coming out of the pits and retired with damage to the car. He then crashed into the wall in Sunday qualifying - a repair was impossible before the race. As a result, the runner-up in the 2024 world championship also jeopardised his last title chances.
