Strategy up and down at Jaguar: Cassidy benefits, Evans rants - also against Beckmann!

The races of the two Jaguar drivers could hardly have been more different: Nick Cassidy advanced from fifth to first place thanks to a good strategy and won Saturday's race, while pole-sitter Mitch Evans was pushed behind. However, the reason was not only a botched strategy, but also two unfortunate situations for him with both Kiro drivers.

Evans led the first laps and kept Nyck de Vries and Pascal Wehrlein at bay behind him. But then Jaguar chose a different strategy to Mahindra and Porsche with Attack Mode. De Vries and Wehrlein took their first activations on lap 17. One lap later, de Vries overtook Evans in Attack Mode, followed shortly afterwards by Wehrlein.

Then Kiro driver David Beckmann also came racing up from behind in Attack Mode and got ahead of Evans when he finally drove through the Attack Zone. As a result, Evans was stuck behind the German for a long time. The leading duo - and thus the potential victory - moved further and further away from Evans.

After the race, Evans was furious with Beckmann, who held him back with his alternative strategy of using a lot of energy early on and at the same time, as a Porsche Junior, played into the hands of works driver Wehrlein. "I don't know if he's ruining other people's races on purpose or if he wants to help other people and teams...", rages Evans in response to a question from a colleague at Motorsport-Magazin.

Evans criticises Beckmann & team strategy

"The guy makes mistakes in every corner. He has four per cent less energy or something. The fact that I got stuck behind him cost me the race win today", the Jaguar driver is certain.

"But I shouldn't have been in that position in the first place", he adds. "I was leading before the Attack Modes (...) and should have taken it on the same lap as de Vries and Wehrlein, that's clear. But there was a call and I paid the price. The others are on the podium and I'm somewhere in P nowhere."

However, the second Kiro driver also contributed to this: Dan Ticktum drove into the back of Evans while fighting with Jake Dennis in turn 19 and spun him, causing the "Kiwi" to drop from 7th to 14th place. In the end, Evans finished tenth and scored four championship points - thanks in part to his pole position.

Cassidy: "To be honestly, Mitch got to call the shots today"

Things went much better for team-mate Cassidy, who has taken three wins in the last five races alone and is now third overall in the championship - the same position he finished in last season. Already in the early stages, lying in 4th position, he enthused on the radio: "This is the best car I've had all year." However, there were more things that went in his favour.

Cassidy was the first driver in the lead group to take Pit Boost, giving him a fine run to capitalise on. "The energy advantage we had at the start meant my pace in clean air was strong. I had to get a little gap to Nyck", he explained to e-Formula.news. In the end, he also managed to overtake the Dutchman thanks to a good Attack Mode strategy and won.

His strategy was not necessarily Jaguar's first choice: "To be honest, it was because Mitch qualified first, he had the choice today, so he could choose if he wanted to stop early or go late. It was actually an advantage to stop later because in case there was a Full Course Yellow you have a big gain."

"I'm really proud" - Cassidy can still be runner-up in the championship

"The main problem, I think, from Mitch, was that he was in the lead the whole time until the pit stop window, he had no energy. So I think his strategy was maybe correct, but him being so far down on energy was quite hurtful to his race."

Cassidy did not only win because of his successful strategy. His pace was also remarkable. "Even at the end of the race after the safety car you saw I could kind of make a gap when all of a sudden everyone had lots of energy and so that really showed actually how much speed we had today. So I'm very, very proud."

This latest victory means Jaguar is suddenly third in the teams' championship - who would have thought that a few weeks ago? Cassidy can even finish runner-up on Sunday if he scores 14 points more than Wehrlein.
