10 points for Jaguar?! The new manufacturers' world championship of Formula E explained

Since the current 2024-25 season, there has been a third classification in the Formula E World Championship: in addition to the drivers and teams, the best manufacturer is now also recognised by the FIA. However, the manufacturers' championship works in a fundamentally different way to the team championship, as was particularly evident at the Mexico City E-Prix. e-Formula.news explains how the points for the manufacturers are determined.

The publication of the points standings in the manufacturers' classification after the race in Mexico City caused confusion among many fans: in particular, hardly anyone could understand the ten championship points for Jaguar and the first point for the new manufacturer Lola. The reason: neither a Jaguar-powered car nor one of the two Lola-Yamaha ABT cars finished in the top 10 in Mexico, so where did the points come from?

This is in the sporting regulations

The FIA has introduced the new paragraph 6.3 in the regulations. It literally states: "Points for the title will be awarded at the end of each race in accordance with the table in Article 6.4 and taking only into account the results from the best two cars powered by their homologated car(s). The cars that do not score any points will not appear in the standings and the points will be allocated to the following Manufacturer’s car eligible to score points. Points allocated for the driver obtaining the Pole Position and the Fastest Lap will not be counted."

In particular, the passage that cars that do not receive points do not even appear in the classification is difficult to understand at first glance: This is because other cars that have come away empty-handed in the driver and team standings move up.

What does this mean in the case of the Mexico City E-Prix?

Four cars with Porsche and four cars with Stellantis powertrain (DS/Maserati) finished in the top ten in the race in Mexico City. However, only the top two finishers receive points for the manufacturers' championship. Jake Dennis, for example, drops out of the classification despite finishing fourth because he was only the third-best Porsche-powered driver. As a result, Jean-Eric Vergne in 5th place only receives ten points for the drivers' and teams' championship, but twelve points for the manufacturers' championship. Put simply, it is as if Jake Dennis had not driven at all.

Position Driver Points Manufacturer Manufacturer position Manufacturer points
1 Oliver Rowland 25 Nissan 1 25
2 Antonio Felix da Costa 18 Porsche 1 18
3 Pascal Wehrlein 15 Porsche 2 15
4 Jake Dennis 12 Porsche 3 -
5 Jean-Eric Vergne 10 Stellantis 1 12
6 Max Günther 8 Stellantis 2 10
7 Stoffel Vandoorne 6 Stellantis 3 -
8 Nyck de Vries 4 Mahindra 1 8
9 Nico Müller 2 Porsche 4 -
10 Jake Hughes 1 Stellantis 4 -
11 Robin Frijns 0 Jaguar 1 6
12 Nick Cassidy 0 Jaguar 2 4
13 Norman Nato 0 Nissan 2 2
14 Taylor Barnard 0 Nissan 3 -
15 Zane Maloney 0 Lola Yamaha 1 1

This allocation of points means that Jaguar in particular gets off lightly in the manufacturers' championship, although neither the works team nor the customer team Envision Racing had a car in the top 10: a total of four cars from Porsche and Stellantis, which all finished ahead of Robin Frijns, the best-placed Jaguar driver, are excluded from the classification. Positions 11 and 12 thus become seventh and eighth place respectively.

On the other hand, Porsche cannot benefit from having three cars in the top four. Even though the German manufacturer emerged victorious in the manufacturers' championship in Mexico, some of its rivals scored significantly more points than in the teams' classification.
