Vergne & Cassidy confirmed - Citroen starts Formula E debut with a strong driver pairing

Tim Neuhaus

After it was officially announced less than a week ago that Citroen will compete in Formula E next season, both regular drivers have now also been announced. Following the reorganisation from Maserati to Citroen, both Jake Hughes and Stoffel Vandoorne will have to make way. In their place, two-time Formula E champion Jean-Eric Vergne from DS Penske and Nick Cassidy from Jaguar will take over.

Together, the two veterans have 22 victories in Formula E, making them one of the most successful driver pairings on the grid. In addition to his involvement in Formula E, Jean Eric Vergne remains closely associated with the Stellantis Group, even outside of the electric racing series. His new team-mate Nick Cassidy will also take the wheel for the Stellantis brand Peugeot in the WEC in future.

Vergne not in gold and black for the first time since 2016

Jean-Eric Vergne has competed in every season to date and has contested the last 146 Formula E races in a row - every single one since the 2014 Punta del Este E-Prix. As the only two-time champion, the Frenchman holds the most valuable record in the racing series. He has also celebrated eleven race victories in the electric series to date and has been on pole position a total of 17 times – more often than any other driver.

Vergne has achieved all of his major successes in gold and black, including his two titles for Techeetah in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons. For him, the change is a formality, as he remains under contract with Stellantis. He finished the past season as the best driver with Stellantis power in sixth place in the overall standings.

Cassidy: Change despite runner-up in the world championship

Nick Cassidy and Jaguar announced their separation shortly after the end of the eleventh season. The decisive factor was probably a disastrous first half of the season for the defending champions in the team standings. However, this was followed by what was probably the best second half of the season in Cassidy's career. In the end, the New Zealander even finished as runner-up in the world championship, as he did in the 2023 season. With eleven race wins since his debut in 2021, he is one of the strongest drivers in Formula E and the world championship title seems within reach.
