Jaguar TCS Racing surprisingly won both races of the Formula E "double-header" in Berlin. After Mitch Evans' victory on rainy Saturday, team-mate Nick Cassidy triumphed on Sunday, despite starting the race in 20th place! At e-Formula.news he talks about his race and the goals he still wants to achieve in season 11.
The race on Sunday took place in dry conditions. This meant that the drivers had to save a lot of energy. This did not affect Cassidy in a negative way - it was his key for success in the end! Since the beginning of the Gen3 era, the New Zealander has won one race each of all "double-headers" in the German capital. That was the case again this year - despite starting the race from the back of the field.
In an interview with e-Formula.news, he said about his botched qualifying: "As a team, we were very disappointed. On Friday, we looked really competitive in dry conditions. But for qualifying, we took a wrong turn somewhere, which meant we started from the back of the grid."
He was all the more delighted after his victory: "That was a really good race, but also a tough one, as many cars had the same strategy as me. So I knew that everyone from 13th place onwards was doing the same thing. In the race the car was great! Towards the end I was able to show my true pace."
Cassidy's victory and the team's generally improving form means that he is now fifth in the drivers' world championship. When we asked him whether second place was still achievable with a view to the final "double-header" in London, he said: "Because the season has been so difficult, I have not been looking at the drivers' championship. Since Monaco, things have been going better for us. My goal before this weekend was to finish the last races in the top 6. That's what I'm still aiming for."
Evans: "Just happy the streak without points has finally ended"
Cassidy's team-mate Evans, on the other hand, was able to win the race on the completely rainy Saturday. He laid the foundation for this in qualifying, which was held without the duel phase due to the adverse track conditions - as was previously the case in Shanghai. Despite late pressure from Porsche driver Pascal Wehrlein, Evans was undeterred and drove to a start-finish victory: "I didn't expect to be so strong today. The car has been a rocket since qualifying. Of course, that makes life easier", said the New Zealander in the post-race press conference.
"I'm just happy that the streak without points has finally ended. I just want to do the best I can this season and put us in a better position for next season," he added. For Evans, it was the 14th win of his Formula E career. He thus drew level with Sebastien Buemi and is now the new record holder together with the Swiss driver. When asked by e-Formula.news what this means to him, he said briefly and succinctly with a smile: "I still have as many as him? Then I don't care!"
The big haul of points in Berlin meant an equally big jump in the teams' championship for Jaguar TCS Racing. The "Big Cat" is now only six points behind DS Penske in fourth place in the championship. Third place therefore still seems catchable. Both drivers are now focusing on the final "double-header" of the season, which will take place in London on 26 and 27 July. There, Jaguar will try one last time to get the maximum out of it before Nick Cassidy will most likely says goodbye to his team and moves on to another team.
