After media reports a few days ago that twelve teams with 24 cars will once again compete in the Gen4 era of Formula E, it is now clear who has acquired the twelfth team licence in the electric racing series: Porsche announced on Monday afternoon that it will compete in Formula E with two works teams in the future. In addition, the German sports car manufacturer will continue to supply a customer team in the future, meaning that six Porsche 99X Electric cars will be on the grid.
Porsche will be the first manufacturer represented in Formula E to field four factory cars in the Gen4 era. The manufacturer's announcement suggests that it intends to promote young talent on both the driver and engineering sides. Just like the team with which Porsche has been competing in Formula E since season 6, the second racing team will also be based at the Porsche Development Centre in Weissach.
Cupra Kiro is considered to have the best chances of becoming the future customer team. The Silverstone-based team, which will compete under the US flag after an investor comes on board in 2024, is currently still using a (software-enhanced) powertrain from season 10. The second current Porsche customer team, Andretti, is expected to start the Gen4 era with customer engines from Nissan.
"Motorsport shapes our brand," says Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President Porsche Motorsport. "Our heritage in traditional motorsport is unique and is reflected in every Porsche. In the future, we want to be able to say the same about electric motorsport."
Laudenbach: "Compared to other racing series, Formula E offers a very attractive balance"
"Compared to other racing series, Formula E offers a very attractive balance between effort and return", Laudenbach adds. "It also gives us the opportunity to further develop technical solutions that are relevant to our production sports cars. Among other things, we want to use this operational shift to find and promote new talent at all levels, not just drivers."
"When marketing the additional cars, we want to create as much independence as possible, not just expand our current presence," announces Laudenbach. "Next year marks 75 years of Porsche Motorsport – a success story that will also be shaped by stories from electric motorsport in the future."
Dodds: "Demonstrates significant strength in our series"
"The commitment by Porsche to acquire an additional license from Season 13 (2026/27) of the Formula E World Championship demonstrates significant strength in our series and its dedication to innovation and electrification at the pinnacle of motorsport", says Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E. "Porsche has been an important part of the Formula E family since 2019, during which time they have been successful in securing Teams', Manufacturers' and Drivers' World Championships."
"They are a proven success in transfer of race to road technology, with their road cars boasting innovations that have been developed directly from the race track in Formula E", he adds. "With the significant performance advancements planned for the Gen4 cars, the grid for the 2026/27 season is already looking strong."
