Tennis star Rafael Nadal is entering the E1 Series with his own team. The racing category for electric boats made the announcement on Tuesday. The first race is to be held later this year. The Spaniard's team thus follows Team Mexico - founded by Formula One driver Sergio Perez - and the Venice Racing Team.
"I like the fact that E1 has a clear mission and is committed to preserving marine ecosystems," Nadal said. "As a professional athlete, I know how small advances have a positive impact on performance. It's good news for our oceans that this approach is being applied to the E1 to enable sustainable mobility on the seas."
Possible driver:s for the inaugural season have not yet been announced for any team. Nadal and his tennis school Rafa Nadal Academy are also said to be involved in the Blue Action Program, E1's sustainability initiative. In addition, an international leadership event focusing on sports and sustainability is to be planned jointly.
