Formula E in Mexico 2024: the qualifying groups at a glance
Svenja König
The first race of the 2024 Formula E season is just around the corner. A few hours before the start of the Mexico City E-Prix (9 pm CET), positions on the starting grid will be decided in qualifying from 4:40 pm. All riders will first compete in a group stage in the time trial before the top four from each group meet in a knockout format.
Unlike usual, Formula E does not sort the groups at the start of the season according to the current championship standings. Instead, all teams nominated one of their drivers each for groups A and B, in which the fastest lap times are contested one after the other. The knockout phase then takes place "within" the groups. In the quarter-finals, the fastest driver will race against the fourth-fastest driver and the second-fastest driver against the third-fastest driver in the same group. The fastest of the two groups only meet in the final.
