Formula E in Mexico: The qualifying groups at a glance

The start of the 2023 Formula E season is just around the corner. At the Mexico City E-Prix, qualifying will start at 4:40 p.m. and the positions on the starting grid will be decided. As in the previous year, the drivers will first compete in a group stage before the top four of each group meet in a knockout format

Unlike usual, Formula E sorts the groups at the start of the season not according to the current World Championship standings. Instead, all teams nominated one of their drivers for each of the groups A and B, in which the fastest lap times are fought for one after the other. The knockout phase then takes place "within" the groups. Thus, in the quarter-finals, the fastest driver will race against the fourth-fastest, or the second-fastest against the third-fastest in the same group.
