Formula E in Sanya: The qualifying groups for the E-Prix at a glance
Tim Neuhaus
For the first time since the Gen2 era, Formula E is returning to Sanya. The last drivers to finish on the podium in this major city on the Chinese island of Hainan were Jean-Eric Vergne, Oliver Rowland and Antonio Felix da Costa. All three have since gone on to win a Formula E title. However, their success on the Sanya Street Circuit was so long ago that it does not automatically make them the favourites. Nevertheless, Rowland and Felix da Costa, at least, still have a good chance of securing pole position!
Drivers in the odd-numbered championship positions will start in Group A, whilst those in the even-numbered positions will start in Group B. The aim here is to finish in the top four of the group, as this is the only way to reach the knockout stage. There, two drivers will face off against each other in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final, battling for pole position and the first three World Championship points of the race day.
