Formula E in Tokyo: An overview of the qualifying groups for Race 1

Formula E is making its night-time racing debut in Tokyo! Not only is the race taking place at night for the first time, but so is qualifying. On the brightly lit streets of Japan’s megacity, the battle for the world championship continues to intensify – everyone wants to bag the three points for pole position. Nowhere else could starting from pole be as crucial as in Tokyo. With 20 corners and a tight temporary circuit layout, overtaking on the Japanese streets will be difficult.

Drivers in the odd-numbered championship positions start in Group A, whilst those in the even-numbered positions start in Group B. The aim here is to finish in the top four positions in the group, as this is the only way to reach the knockout stage. There, two drivers will compete against each other in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final, battling for pole position and the first three World Championship points of the race day.
