Valencia tests on Tuesday: Evans starts with Formula E track record

Tobias Wirtz

Mitch Evans is the winner of the first session of the 2023 pre-season tests in Valencia: the Jaguar driver lapped the Circuit Ricardo Tormo, which was newly asphalted in large parts, in 1:24.474 minutes. Never before has a Formula E driver been so fast on this track configuration. Evans beat Max Günther's best time from last year by 0.653 seconds. The other positions behind him were occupied by Antonio Felix da Costa and Sebastien Buemi.

In addition to the regular drivers, five Formula E rookies were also in action: Taylor Barnard for McLaren, Luca Ghiotto and Victor Martins for Nissan, Zane Maloney for Andretti and Robert Shwartzman for DS Penske. The Israeli also caused the only red flag of the session when he parked his car on the track after about two hours. As the LEDs on the car subsequently indicated an unsafe condition, the car was taken to a secure area in the paddock where experts from battery manufacturer WAE Technologies investigated the problem in more detail. Later, the battery caught fire.

The best Formula E rookie was Barnard, who finished seventh, just ahead of Nico Müller for ABT Cupra. In the top ten positions were drivers from eight different teams and from all six manufacturers in the electric series. After the fire, the first test day was not resumed again. The afternoon session was cancelled.
