The Formula E race track in Monaco is located directly on the harbor basin of the principality. However, the course also takes the drivers past the iconic casino, around the Grand Hotel bend, and through the tunnel familiar from Formula 1. The course is lined with the high-rise apartments of the "rich and the beautiful" of this world, who chose Monaco as their adopted home several decades ago. That's because there is no income or inheritance tax in the tiny city-state on the French Riviera.

With its casino, marina and Mediterranean atmosphere, Monaco is one of the most glamorous venues of the entire Formula E season. Thanks to an area of only around two square kilometers, the principality is considered the second smallest state on earth. Only the Vatican City is smaller. Monaco gained its independence from France in 1489, although France did not recognize the prince's full sovereignty until 1861. Today, around 39,000 people have their main residence in the city, including many Formula E drivers.

Until 2021, the Monaco E-Prix was held on a rotational basis only every two years due to a parallel event (Grand Prix Historique) - even more so on a shortened version of the street circuit used since 1929. In its first seasons, the electric series did not use the uphill passage toward Beau Rivage and instead turned sharply right at turn 1, heading straight towards the tunnel exit and turning the harbor chicane into a harbor hairpin. Since 2022, however, the Formula E version has been 100 percent the same as the familiar Formula 1 layout.

In 2025, Formula E hold a double-header in the Principality for the first time.
