On July 3, 2018, Formula E announced that it would hold a race in Sanya in the future. The city on the southern coast of the Chinese island of Hainan thus fills the vacant China slot in the 2018/19 race calendar and will host an E-Prix for the first time in the fifth season. Sanya beat out candidates such as Shanghai, Guangzhou and Haikou (also on Hainan).
