On 3 July 2018, Formula E announced that it would hold a race in Sanya in future. The city on the south coast of the Chinese island of Hainan thus filled the vacant China slot in the 2018/19 racing calendar and hosted an E-Prix for the first time on 23 March 2019. Sanya prevailed over candidates such as Shanghai, Guangzhou and Haikou (also on Hainan).
As a result of the Chinese government's rigorous measures in response to the coronavirus pandemic, a repeat in subsequent years was out of the question. Even after the end of the pandemic, Formula E preferred Shanghai as the location for the E-Prix in China. It was not until the 2025/26 season, when Formula E added a second Chinese race to its calendar, that a return to Sanya was considered. The second Sanya E-Prix will be held on 20 June 2026. The circuit was only slightly altered for this purpose.
