Mexico City

Mexico’s capital is located inland at an elevation of 2,310 meters and, with more than 20 million residents in its metropolitan area, is one of the largest cities in the world. After Mexico City was already considered a candidate for a race even before the very first Formula E season, the Central American metropolis was finally added to the race calendar in November 2015. The circuit was thus the first traditional racetrack on the Formula E calendar.

Formula E initially raced on a shorter version of the Formula 1 circuit at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, passing by the famous baseball stadium along the way. The circuit can accommodate a total of 40,000 spectators.

In 2020, the track layout was changed and, as part of this, extended from approximately 2.1 to 2.6 km. After the race was canceled in 2021—a temporary hospital was set up in the racetrack’s buildings during the coronavirus pandemic—Mexico City returned to the Formula E race calendar in 2022. In 2023, the track layout was adjusted again: a new chicane was added to provide more opportunities for energy recovery. In 2026, this chicane was removed.

In 2027, Formula E will use the entire Formula 1 circuit for the first time. In this configuration as well, a chicane was added to the start-finish straight to provide more opportunities for energy recovery.
