Puebla is a metropolis of 1.5 million inhabitants in central Mexico and the capital of the state of the same name. The old town of Puebla has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 1987. The city combines the "old" and the "new" Mexico: handicraft products and four-century-old buildings from the colonial era meet modern industry.

In 2021, Puebla became the focus of Formula E. Because the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City was acting as a temporary hospital in the Corona pandemic, the electric series had to relocate its usual Central American run. It opted for a "double-header" at the "Autodromo Miguel E. Abed" in Puebla, with two races on June 19 and 20, 2021.

The WTCC once held three events at the track owned by FIA Sports Vice President Jose Abed. NASCAR series have also driven the course several times. With up to 18 different layout variations, the Formula E circuit offered plenty of flexibility to find a suitable track layout for the E-Prix. The surface of the asphalt was also reminiscent of road courses, which suited Formula E. For 2022, Formula E decided to return to Mexico City after a single guest appearance.
