Mexico's capital is located inland at an altitude of 2,310 meters and is one of the largest cities in the world, with more than 20 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area. After Mexico City was considered a candidate for a race even before the very first Formula E season, the Central American metropolis finally moved into the racing calendar in November 2015. The circuit thus became the first traditional race track on the Formula E calendar.

Formula E uses a shorter version of the Formula One circuit at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez and also passes the well-known baseball stadium. There is capacity for a total of 40,000 spectators.

In 2020, the track layout was changed and in the process extended from around 2.1 to 2.6 km. After the race was cancelled in 2021 - temporary hospital facilities were set up in the track's buildings during the coronavirus pandemic - Mexico City returned to the Formula E racing calendar in 2022. In 2023, the track layout was adapted again: a new chicane was added to offer more opportunities for recuperation.
