On September 13, 2014, the first race in Formula E history took place in Beijing's Olympic Park. The striking National Stadium - popularly known as the "Bird's Nest" - was the venue for the 2008 Summer Olympics and, together with the indoor swimming pool, is one of the architectural highlights of the race track. With a lap length of 3.439 kilometers (equivalent to approximately 1:40 minutes), the Chinese capital is home to the longest Formula E circuit in history. It was designed by Rodrigo Nunes. The Chinese government and the event organizers of Team China Racing (later NextEV TCR, then NIO) were also involved, among others. Before the second edition of the Beijing ePrix, the first chicane after turn 2 was removed.
