Sao Paulo is the largest city in the southern hemisphere of the earth: More than 12.4 million people live here. Centuries ago, indigenous peoples lived in what is now the city, before Portuguese colonialists took the land and founded Sao Paulo in 1554. Today, the city is the economic center of Brazil and is known for its size, its skyscrapers and the "hustle and bustle" on its streets.

Formula E uses the facilities of the Anhembi Sambadrome in Sao Paulo, the very streets where thousands of people party together during annual carnival celebrations. Incidentally, it is not the first motorsport series to hold a race here: Between 2010 and 2013, an adapted version of the Formula E track hosted an annual IndyCar race. A few kilometers away from the Formula E circuit is also the iconic Formula 1 race track "Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace," better known as Interlagos.
