In May 2018, Formula E announced that it had signed a 10-year contract with the government in Saudi Arabia. According to media reports, the long-term deal is expected to bring a total of around 260 million euros into Formula E's coffers. Saudi Arabia has also secured regional exclusivity. If another state on the Arabian Peninsula wants to host a Formula E race, Saudi Arabia must agree.
The electric series has been racing in Diriyah, a historic suburb of the country's capital Riyadh, since Season 5. The Diriyah E-Prix kicked off the Gen2 era on December 15, 2018. Saudi Arabia also opened the Formula E season in the three following seasons, but this time with a "double header" in each case, i.e. two races on the same weekend. From 2021, the races were held as night races under floodlights.
In 2025, the racing series will not be able to race in Diriyah due to the heavy construction work around the track. This had already been a problem in previous years, as the race track was always very dirty.
