In May 2018, Formula E announced that it had signed a 10-year contract with the government in Saudi Arabia. According to media reports, the long-term deal is expected to bring a total of around 260 million euros into Formula E's coffers. Saudi Arabia has also secured regional exclusivity. If another state on the Arabian Peninsula wants to host a Formula E race, Saudi Arabia must agree.

The electric series has been racing in Diriyah, a historic suburb of the country's capital Riyadh, since Season 5. The Diriyah E-Prix kicked off the Gen2 era on December 15, 2018. Saudi Arabia also opened the Formula E season in the three following seasons, but this time with a "double header" in each case, i.e. two races on the same weekend. Since 2021, the races are held as night races under floodlights.
