For almost a millennium, London has been the capital of the United Kingdom and its predecessors. As the seat of government and the British royal family, London developed into an important trading center in Europe in the Middle Ages, became the capital of the British Empire in the 19th century, and is now an important cultural and financial center. Around 14.2 million people now live in the London metropolitan region, including many employees of Formula E, which has its headquarters in the city.

In its first two seasons, Formula E held its season finale in the city. Back then, the London E-Prix was held on narrow paths of Battersea Park. Following protests from a citizens' group, Formula E initially withdrew from London after the 2016 edition.

In 2021, the racing series returned to the British capital and has since been staging their races at the ExCeL exhibition center. The unique selling point: The race track runs through one of the exhibition halls, which confronts the drivers with additional challenges such as different lighting conditions, track surfaces and weather conditions. Since 2023, Formula E's season finale takes places in London again.
