Jake Hughes was signed as a reserve driver by ROKiT Venturi Racing shortly before the start of the 2021 Formula E season. The Briton supported the racing team at selected races as a reserve driver directly at the track. Added to this were duties in Venturi's race simulator, which the team used to prepare for race weekends.

Hughes has competed in the races of numerous Formula 3 series in recent years. After starts in GP3 and European Formula 3, he raced in FIA Formula 3 until 2020, followed by his first Formula 2 starts the following year. In 2019 and 2020, Hughes also competed in Formula E's annual rookie test, first for Nio, then Mercedes.

After also being a test and reserve driver for Mercedes and Venturi in the 2022 season, he ended his Formula 2 involvement in the summer of the same year to focus on his Formula E career. Here he has been competing for Neom McLaren since 2023. He was particularly impressive in qualifying, achieving pole position twice in his debut season.
