Brendon Hartley started his motorsport career in his native New Zealand in 2002, before celebrating his first successes in Europe five years later in Formula 3 and the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup. He then became part of the Red Bull junior squad, as part of which he traveled to the "premier class" Grands Prix in 2009 and 2010 as a reserve driver for the Toro Rosso and Red Bull Racing Formula 1 teams. It would not be until 2017, however, that he would make his debut in Formula One, having previously won the FIA World Endurance Championship twice with Porsche and the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans once.

From the end of 2018, Porsche used Hartley to develop the first of its own powertrains for Formula E. For a long time, the New Zealander was considered a candidate for a regular cockpit in Porsche's debut season. In July 2019, however, the German sports car manufacturer put Andre Lotterer alongside the already confirmed Neel Jani. Hartley signed with Dragon Racing a few weeks later for the sixth Formula E season. However, he left the team again before the end of the season.
