James Calado began his motorsport career in 1999 in karting. Here he won a large number of races and, among other things, became champion in the European Intercontinental A Championship in 2005. In 2008 he switched to formula racing, where he won titles in various junior series. In 2010, a move up to British Formula 3 followed, where Calado finished runner-up - just behind his Carlin teammate and eventual Formula E rival Jean-Eric Vergne.
Then Calado moved up to the GP3 series, where he again managed to finish runner-up. In 2012, Calado competed in the GP2 series. He finished his debut season in fifth place with two wins. The following season he improved to third place, beating his teammate Daniel Abt by a significant margin. He also became a test driver for the Force India Formula One team.
In 2014, Calado left formula racing and from then on drove sports car races with Ferrari in various categories. He competed in the World Endurance Championship (WEC), the North American Weathertech SportsCar Championship, the ELMS, the Asian Le Mans Series and the Blancpain GT Series. In 2017, he was WEC champion in the LMGTE-Pro class for AF Corse before becoming ALMS champion in 2018/19 with four wins from four races. In 2019, he won the LMGTE-Pro category at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
For the 2019/20 Formula E season, Calado was signed as a regular driver by Jaguar. However, he failed to keep up with his teammate Mitch Evans, particularly in qualifying. He skipped the last two races of the season due to a scheduling conflict with the WEC, and the team replaced him with Tom Blomqvist.
