Sheldon van der Linde was introduced as the test and reserve driver for BMW i Andretti Motorsport in Formula E in December 2020. The South African was on site for the first time as part of the BMW team for the 2021 season opener in Santiago. He had previously familiarized himself with the BMW iFE.21 for Season 7 during test sessions and in the BMW Motorsport simulator in Munich.
Before that, van der Linde had been a BMW works driver since 2019. He won the 9 Hours of Kyalami in the BMW M6 GT3 at the end of 2020 and finished third in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. In 2022, he took the DTM championship in a BMW M4 GT3. He competed for Jaguar in the 2023 Formula E rookie test.
