After winning almost all the titles in his early career in Australian and New Zealand racing series - including the Toyota Racing Series twice - Mitch Evans turned his focus to European-based series such as GP3 from 2011. In 2012, he won the championship title there at the age of 18, just ahead of his later Formula E rival Daniel Abt. Between 2013 and 2016, Evans competed in GP2, winning several races and achieving his best result of the season in 2014 with 4th place overall. In 2015, he also took part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Simultaneously with Jaguar's entry into Formula E, Evans moved into electric motorsport in 2016 and was offered a cockpit by the British carmaker. The Kiwi, who has been managed for years by former Formula 1 driver Mark Webber, proved competitive and was to leave all his teammates - including Season 1 champion Nelson Piquet Jr. - well behind in his first Formula E years.

At the 2017 Hong Kong E-Prix, Evans celebrated his first podium; at the 2019 Rome E-Prix, he finally took the first Formula E victory for himself and Jaguar. His best result in the overall standings so far is second place in the 2022 season, where he battled for the title until the season finale. He also had a chance of winning the title in 2023 until the season finale, but finished third overall in the end.
