The Briton Alexander Sims first drew attention to himself in 2008 when he finished runner-up in the British Formula Renault. In addition to his involvement in formula racing, he also contested races in GT cars from 2012 onwards, finishing runner-up in the British GT Championship and the U.S. WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with BMW, among others.

At the 2017 official Formula E tests in Valencia, Sims climbed into the car for the BMW-backed Andretti team. He was subsequently considered a candidate for a cockpit at Andretti, but ultimately lost out to Tom Blomqvist. With BMW joining as a manufacturer for the 2018/19 season, Sims was eventually signed as a regular driver for the BMW i Andretti Motorsport team.

After three pole positions, a race win at the 2019 Diriyya E-Prix and two 13th-place overall finishes, Sims left the team after the 2019/20 season and joined Mahindra Racing for the 2021 championship year. Sims also competed for the Indians in 2022, but left the racing series after the season to focus on his career in endurance racing.
