Robin Frijns became European Formula BMW champion in 2010. In 2011, the Dutchman secured the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup title and repeated the feat a year later in Formula Renault 3.5. Frijns then worked as a test driver in Formula 1 and competed in GP2 and Blancpain Endurance Series.

In Formula E, Frijns initially competed for Andretti from season 2. Due to BMW joining the Andretti team for the 2018/19 season and Frijns racing for Audi in GT series, he had to vacate his cockpit despite good performances. The Ingolstadt-based company later included Frijns in its works driver lineup for the DTM. Frijns also joined the new Audi customer team Virgin Racing in Formula E for Season 5 and finished the first year in fourth place overall with two race victories - his best result to date.

Until 2022, Frijns competed for the Audi customer team, which has since been renamed Envision Racing. In 2023, he competed for one season with ABT Cupra before returning to Envision in 2024. After the 2024/25 season, which he finished in a disappointing 19th place overall, the Dutchman left the team and Formula E. Instead, he now drives for BMW as a works driver in endurance racing.
