Rene Rast switched to touring car racing at the start of the millennium after two mediocre years in the ADAC Formula BMW, winning the ADAC VW Polo Cup at his first attempt in 2005. After finishing runner-up in the Seat Leon Supercopa Germany, he moved to the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany, where he was champion in 2008 and 2012. Between 2008 and 2012, Rast also competed in the Porsche Supercup, winning the championship title in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Together with Kelvin van der Linde, the Minden native won the ADAC GT Masters in 2014. After a second-place finish in the LMP2 category at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Rast switched to the DTM, where he won the drivers' title in the 2017, 2019 and 2020 seasons with Audi.

Rast made his Formula E debut at the 2016 Berlin E-Prix at Karl-Marx-Allee, when he deputized for Antonio Felix da Costa at Team Aguri. Four years later, he took over the Audi cockpit from Daniel Abt after the first half of the 2019/20 season to contest the final six races of Berlin in August 2020. Thanks to convincing performances and a podium result at Tempelhof, Audi confirmed Rast alongside Lucas di Grassi for the 2021 season.

With Audi's factory exit, Rast also temporarily said goodbye to Formula E, but returned to the electric series in 2023 with McLaren. However, this too came to an end after just one season, with Rast concentrating instead on his role as a BMW works driver in the DTM and the World Endurance Championship.
