James Rossiter worked his way up through British Formula 3 and the Formula 3 Euro Series to Formula 1, where he was a test driver for the BAR, Honda, Super Aguri and Force India teams between 2005 and 2013. At the same time, he raced in the ALMS, ILMC and the WEC, but mainly enjoyed success in the Japanese Super Formula and Super GT.

After a few test drives in Formula E, including 2017 with Venturi, Rossiter climbed into the car for DS Techeetah on a one-off basis during practice for the 2020 Marrakech E-Prix for Jean-Eric Vergne, who had fallen ill. From January 2020, he was sports director of the Chinese racing team before being appointed team principal of Maserati MSG Racing in October 2022. At the end of the season, he surprisingly resigned.
