Nico Müller raced in the Swiss Formula Renault 2.0 in 2008 and then moved up to the GP3 series, where he immediately finished third in the championship. In 2014, Audi signed him as a factory driver for the DTM, where he won his first race at the Norisring in 2016. In 2019 and 2020, he secured the runner-up position in the championship after close duels with Rene Rast.

In addition to the DTM, Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler engaged Müller in 2018 and 2019 as a test and reserve driver for Formula E. Prior to the 2019/20 season, Müller finally signed on as a regular driver with Dragon. In the 2021 season, he recorded a surprising podium at the Valencia E-Prix, but left the team again halfway through the season to focus on his activities with Audi. In addition to his DTM program, Müller also contested occasional GT events for the Ingolstadt-based company. At the end of 2022, he ended his relationship with the German automaker.

Müller returned to Formula E with ABT Cupra in 2023. After a difficult start to the season, he achieved some respectable successes towards the end of the season. He remained with the team in 2024.
