Nyck de Vries was crowned karting world champion in 2010 and 2011. As a participant in Formula 1 team McLaren's development program, he switched to formula racing in 2012, where he competed in various Formula Renault series. In 2014, de Vries won the championship title in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and in the Alpine Formula Renault. Here he prevailed against Charles Leclerc, among others. The following year he finished third in Formula Renault 3.5.
After a year in GP3, de Vries made his debut in Formula 2 in 2017, where he won the title with ART Grand Prix in 2019. Shortly thereafter, he joined Mercedes-Benz EQ as a regular driver in Formula E for the 2019/20 season. At the final race of his debut season, he scored his first Formula E podium, finishing second in Berlin. A year later, he finally won his first world championship title at the same venue and made a significant contribution to the team title for Mercedes. He also won two races in 2022, but only finished the season in ninth place due to a lack of consistency.
Parallel to his involvement in formula racing, de Vries competed for Racing Team Nederlands in the LMP2 category of the World Endurance Championship WEC. At the end of 2020, he also contested the Formula 1 Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi for the Mercedes team. After making his Formula 1 debut at the 2022 Italian Grand Prix as a replacement for the ill Alexander Albon at Williams and immediately finishing 9th, AlphaTauri signed the Dutchman as a regular driver for the 2023 season. In return, De Vries terminated a contract signed with Maserati MSG Racing for Formula E.
After being released from AlphaTauri in the middle of the season, de Vries returned to Formula E with Mahindra Racing for the 2024 season.
