Maximilian - or Max - Günther, who holds both German and Austrian citizenship, was one of Germany's greatest young talents in motorsport in the 2010s. Born in Oberstdorf, he received numerous awards, including ADAC Junior Motor Sportsman of the Year in 2016. After winning titles in various karting championships, Günther was runner-up twice in the ADAC Formula Masters. He then competed in the Formula 3 European Championship for three years, finishing second in 2016 and third in 2017. Günther was also involved as a test and reserve driver in the DTM for Mercedes.
In Formula E, Günther was already active as a test and reserve driver for Dragon Racing during the 2017/18 season. For the 2018/19 season, the team made the German youngster a regular driver. Günther contested his first season in Formula 2 in parallel, winning the sprint race at Silverstone. In the course of his first Formula E season, Günther was temporarily replaced by Felipe Nasr for three races. With two fifth-place finishes in Paris and Bern, he demonstrated his qualities despite an inferior car, clearly beating his experienced teammate Jose Maria Lopez.
This also convinced Team BMW i Andretti Motorsport, which hired him as a BMW works driver between 2019 and 2021. At the 2020 Santiago E-Prix, Günther won his first E-Prix - as the youngest race winner in Formula E history at the time. For the 2022 season, he switched to the Japanese manufacturer's team Nissan e.dams. After a disappointing season, however, he left the team again and signed on with Maserati MSG Racing.
Here he won his fourth Formula E race in Jakarta in 2023 and remained with the team in 2024, where he won again in Tokyo. Before the 2024/25 season, he switched back to the Penske team, where he will line up as team-mate to Jean-Eric Vergne.
