Kamui Kobayashi won the GP2 Asia Series title in 2009 and made his debut in Formula 1 the same year. The Japanese driver competed for Sauber in the "premier class" from 2010 to 2012. After a season in the World Endurance Championship WEC for Toyota in 2013, Kobayashi returned to Formula 1 with Caterham in 2014. In 2015, he raced in Super Formula before heading to the WEC again in 2016. In mid-November, he was signed by Formula E team MS&AD Andretti for the 2017 Hong Kong E-Prix, where he competed under the Monaco flag.

After two races, however, Kobayashi had to make way for Tom Blomqvist, as expected. Since then, Kobayashi has won several endurance events, including the 24 Hours of Daytona and Le Mans.
