After winning championship titles in Brazilian Formula Chevrolet (1999), Italian and European Formula Renault 2000 (both in 2000) and European Formula 3000 (2001), Massa made his Formula 1 debut with Sauber in 2002. After a season as a test driver, he returned to the Swiss team's regular cockpit in 2004, and his performances caught the attention of Scuderia Ferrari officials.

In 2006, Massa became Michael Schumacher's teammate at Ferrari. In 2011, he suffered a serious head injury when he was hit in the head by a metal spring during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix and was out for the rest of the season. Massa was back on the grid from 2012. After eight years at Ferrari, he moved to Williams in 2014, where he drove until 2017.

His career highlight: Massa was designated Formula 1 world champion for a short time. He crossed the finish line as the winner in a Ferrari at the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix and was already being celebrated as the first Brazilian Formula One champion since Ayrton Senna in 1991. Then Lewis Hamilton snatched the world title he thought was safe away from him by overtaking Timo Glock shortly before the finish line - Massa became vice world champion.

After a Formula E test drive for Jaguar Racing and negotiations with several teams in the electric racing series, Felipe Massa finally signed a three-year contract for the 2018/19 season with the Monegasque racing team Venturi. After two mixed years in which he only achieved a podium finish in third place at the 2019 Monaco E-Prix, Massa and the team announced the Brazilian's early end to his career in Formula E shortly after the final race of the 2019/20 season in Berlin.
