Stoffel Vandoorne won the F4 Eurocup 1.6 in 2010. Two years later, he became champion in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and switched to Formula Renault 3.5. He was also included in the development squad of the McLaren Formula 1 team. After winning the runner-up title, he switched to the GP2 series, where he was also runner-up at the first attempt. The following year, he won the GP2 championship.

Since there was still no place for him in McLaren's Formula 1 team, he contested a season in the Japanese Super Formula in 2016, finishing fourth. He also replaced the injured Fernando Alonso at the Bahrain Grand Prix, where he finished tenth and scored a championship point on debut. In 2017, he became Alonso's teammate at McLaren Honda, but failed to impress in two full years.

On October 15, 2018, Vandoorne was announced as a driver for the new German Formula E team HWA Racelab - the vanguard of what would later become the Mercedes factory team. At the 2019 Rome E-Prix, the Belgian scored his first podium finish in Formula E. After his debut season, he was given a cockpit with the Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E team, as expected. He finally achieved his first victory in the electric series at the 2020 season finale in Berlin. Vandoorne finished the season as runner-up. In 2022, he finally won the world championship title with Mercedes.

In 2023, he moved to DS Penske as the reigning Formula E World Champion. However, the season was very disappointing for the Belgian, who only finished eleventh in the overall standings.
