The Munich-based automotive group BMW entered Formula E for the fifth season (2018/19) as an independent manufacturer with a works team. The Bavarians took over the manufacturer's license from Andretti. In the years before the factory entry, BMW had already become increasingly involved with the U.S. racing team Andretti in preparation for season 5.

At the end of the 2021 season, BMW pulled out of Formula E on the factory side, but continued to supply its customer team Andretti with powertrains in 2022.
