The owner of the Andretti Autosport team, based in Indianapolis (USA), is racing legend Michael Andretti, son of Formula One world champion Mario Andretti. The team has been competing in the IndyCar Series since 2003, with Andretti winning four IndyCar Series championships, two Indy Lights titles, a USF2000 championship and the Indianapolis 500 on multiple occasions. In 2014, Andretti entered Formula E as a founding member.
In the electric series, the team received early support from technology partner BMW before Andretti became a BMW factory team in late 2018. The title sponsor of the U.S. racing team from Season 2 to Season 4 was Japanese insurance group MS&AD Insurance (formerly Amlin). BMW became the team's officially registered powertrain manufacturer in the 2018/19 season. However, the starting license remained with Andretti, which is why the team always competed under the U.S. flag.
Due to BMW's factory exit at the end of the 2021 season, Andretti officially became a BMW customer team for Season 8. Avalanche, a blockchain company, became the team's title sponsor. For the Gen3 era, Andretti signed a deal with Porsche to be supplied with customer powertrains. In addition to Jake Dennis, who has been competing for the team since the seventh season, Andretti signed former Porsche factory driver Andre Lotterer for 2023.
While Dennis became world champion, Lotterer finished the season in a disappointing 18th place and was replaced by Norman Nato for 2024. However, the team was unable to build on its successful 2023 season and only finished fifth in the team standings. Norman Nato was replaced by Swiss driver Nico Müller for the 2024/25 season.
