In July 2017, Porsche announced that it would enter Formula E as a works team from the 2019/20 season. Neel Jani and Brendon Hartley initially took over the testing work with the drivetrain, developed in-house.

For the debut season in 2019/20, Porsche signed former Techeetah driver Andre Lotterer. Jani was given the second cockpit. Both had previously competed in the World Endurance Championship for the sports car manufacturer. The team finished a mediocre first Formula E season in eighth place overall. Lotterer stood on the podium twice as a runner-up and also scored a pole position.

For the 2021 season, former DTM champion Pascal Wehrlein switched from Mahindra to Porsche, succeeding Neel Jani. The Swiss has since held the role of test and reserve driver - alongside Simona de Silvestro. An administrative error by the team at the 2021 Puebla E-Prix prevented Porsche's first race win. The disqualification of race winner Pascal Wehrlein, whose tyres had not been declared correctly before the race, was one of the biggest headlines of the year.

The team then celebrated a commanding one-two finish at the 2022 Mexico City E-Prix, with Wehrlein winning ahead of teammate Lotterer. At the end of the season, Lotterer left the team and was replaced by former champion Antonio Felix da Costa for 2023. Porsche had its strongest Formula E season to date, finishing the season in fourth place in the team standings with four race wins.
