Originally, Team Trulli was to have entered the inaugural Formula E championship as Drayson Racing. However, Lord Drayson withdrew his entry a few months before the start of the season, whereupon Formula 1 veteran Jarno Trulli took over the team. In the first year, the Italian competed as team owner as well as driver. After the first season, he vacated his cockpit for Salvador Duran, who, however, was not to make a racing appearance.
Trulli already had major difficulties with Motomatica's new drivetrain during testing for the second season at Donington, UK. Despite only having completed a few test laps, the Swiss racing team decided to start the season with the new powertrain. Trulli was unable to compete at the season opener in Beijing because Chinese customs did not release parts of the powertrain. In Putrajaya, the Motomatica JT-01 subsequently failed to make it through the FIA's technical scrutineering. Finally, before the 2015 Punta del Este E-Prix, Trulli announced their withdrawal from Formula E. The vacated slot was taken over by Jaguar for the third season.
