The "Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team" entered Formula E for the sixth season (2019/20) with a factory entry. In doing so, the German manufacturer took over the racing team from HWA Racelab, which had already competed as a vanguard for Mercedes in the electric series the year before in order to gain initial experience. After HWA had also been responsible for the racing operations of the Mercedes factory entry in its debut season, the team announced at the end of 2020 that it was moving completely to Brackley (UK; home of the Mercedes Formula One team) at the end of the seventh season, as well as the end of its operational collaboration with HWA.

Mercedes celebrated its first major success with a double victory at the final race of the 2020 season in Berlin. As a result, the "Silver Arrows" secured third place in the team standings in their debut year. In 2021, Mercedes driver Nyck de Vries won the first drivers' world championship title in Formula E. Mercedes also became the teams' world champion. Nevertheless, a few days later in August 2021, Mercedes-Benz announced its exit from the electric championship at the end of the 2022 season.

Mercedes, however, continued to be registered with the FIA as an official manufacturer and developed its own electric powertrains. The Stuttgart-based company also supplied the Venturi customer team with powertrains. In 2022, Mercedes driver Stoffel Vandoorne became world champion, as Mercedes defended the title in the team world championship ahead of customer team Venturi. The squad was subsequently taken over by McLaren Racing and has been competing with customer powertrains from Nissan since the 2023 Formula E World Championship season.
