The Virgin Racing team was founded by British entrepreneur Richard Branson and has been an integral part of the electric series since the first Formula E race in the fall of 2014. The team is the direct successor to Formula 1 racing team Virgin Racing, which was acquired by Marussia after the 2011 season. The team, based in Silverstone, UK, received technological support from DS Automobiles in the early Formula E years. Nevertheless, the "DS Virgin Racing Formula E Team" was initially still responsible for developing its own Formula E powertrain. Then DS acquired the manufacturer's license from Virgin.
After parting ways with DS at the end of the 2017/18 season, Virgin was acquired by Chinese wind turbine manufacturer Envision and started as a customer team with powertrains from Audi. Virgin managed at least one race win in each of the first six Formula E seasons thanks to Sam Bird. After Bird moved to Jaguar for the 2021 season, the team signed New Zealander Nick Cassidy as his successor.
For the 2022 season, the Virgin name disappeared completely from Formula E. The team has since called itself simply Envision Racing. For the Gen3 era, the team signed a deal with Jaguar to supply customer powertrains. While Cassidy remained with the team as a driver, Sebastien Buemi, Formula E's season two champion, was signed on as his new teammate.
Envision won the teams' world championship in 2023, with Cassidy also finishing as runner-up in the drivers' championship. Cassidy moved to the Jaguar works team for the 2024 season and was succeeded by Robin Frijns, who had already driven for the team from 2017 to 2022. With 6th place in the team standings, it was the weakest season in the team's history to date.
