It was only in June that the FG Series car, the FG-Twin, was unveiled. Now those responsible - Nick Heidfeld and Dilbagh Gill - have announced the series' first major partners. These are big names from the German motorsport world: both Schaeffler and the DTM will support the project, which is intended to be a kind of junior programme for electric motorsport.

Formula racing back in the DTM supporting programme

It has long been known that the FG Series wants to get involved in the supporting programme of other series. There are also rumoured to be negotiations with Formula E. However, the first signed contract is now with the DTM combustion engine series. It is not yet known exactly how many and which races are involved. However, the official start of the new racing series is not until 2025.

This means that the all-electric concept will meet the combustion engines of the DTM GT3 cars. ADAC Head of Motorsport Thomas Voss spoke out in favour of the combination at a press conference at the Norisring: "Motorsport is the right field to showcase innovations. For example, I have not yet seen a formula car with possible all-wheel drive. But that doesn't mean that we have to stop the DTM or formula racing with combustion engines."

Schaeffler becomes technical partner

Schaeffler came on board even before the DTM connection was announced. In future, the Bavarian company will provide a large part of the technical supply. In particular, this involves e-mobility components such as inverters and electric motors. The German manufacturer will take care of the associated software too. Schaeffler also hopes that young engineering talent will be able to develop through practical experience in series production.

The focus is on making professional motorsport more cost-effective. The CEO of Schaeffler's motorsport division said in an FG Series press release: "We are proud to supply the FG Series with our e-mobility components and thus lower the financial barriers to entry for talented drivers. In general, affordable e-mobility is the key to a successful green transformation."

Dilbagh Gill, founder of the FG Series, sees great potential in the merger: "They have achieved a lot in other motorsport series - especially as a technical supplier that has won the Formula E Championship." Schaeffler won the teams' championship of the fourth Formula E season in 2018 as a partner of Audi with drivers Lucas di Grassi and Daniel Abt, but then left the racing series.
