Ahead of Formula E comeback with Jaguar: Vandoorne leaves Peugeot with 2 races remaining

Stoffel Vandoorne's return as a full-time Formula E driver appears to be getting closer. The 2022 World Champion has ended his WEC programme with Peugeot two races before the end of the season. The Belgian is expected to take over Mitch Evans' Jaguar seat for the Gen4 era.

Shortly before the expected announcement of his Formula E future, Stoffel Vandoorne has brought his WEC programme with Peugeot to an early end. Peugeot had already confirmed ahead of the Fuji WEC race that the Belgian would leave the team with immediate effect. After the race, Vandoorne also publicly said goodbye to Peugeot and hinted that news about his future may not be far away.

That future is expected to take him back to Formula E. Vandoorne is set to become a full-time driver for Jaguar TCS Racing, where he would take over the seat vacated by Mitch Evans. Official confirmation from Jaguar is still pending.

Vandoorne would not be an external addition for Jaguar. The Belgian already served as the team's reserve driver last season and was also involved in the development of its new Gen4 car. Together with Antonio Felix da Costa, he completed several test outings in the new machine.

Vandoorne set to return with World Championship experience

The Belgian brings plenty of Formula E experience with 103 race starts to his name. His biggest success in the electric series came in 2022, when he won the Drivers' World Championship with Mercedes-EQ. He had already finished runner-up in 2020, behind Antonio Felix da Costa, who now races for Jaguar.

Vandoorne was unable to build on his title success during the Gen3 era. His 2 seasons with DS Penske produced only a handful of highlights and no race victories. He moved to Maserati for the 2024/25 season and returned to the top step of the podium at the rain-affected Tokyo E-Prix, where an unusual strategy helped him to victory. That remained his only win for Maserati MSG Racing before he left the team at the end of the season and became Jaguar's reserve driver for 2025/26.

Vandoorne made his Formula E debut with HWA Racelab in Season 5 and remained a full-time driver when the operation became the Mercedes works team. Across his Formula E career so far, the Belgian has taken four race wins, 17 podium finishes, eight pole positions and scored 596 points.
