Nick Cassidy can finally breathe a sigh of relief. On Sunday, he secured a superior victory in a Formula E race that was completely in difficult wet conditions. The Jaguar driver was proud of his team and the strong weekend. Cassidy thus ended a dry spell that had lasted since the Berlin E-Prix in mid-May 2024.
The tide can turn that quickly: On Saturday, Cassidy's race was already over after an accident on lap 2, and 24 hours later he is the glorious winner. It was raining through the entire Sunday, but the New Zealander was unfazed. In the 3rd free practice session, it was immediately clear that such conditions simply suit him. He secured first place in a very short practice session due to the adverse conditions.
He then did the same in qualifying, which only consisted of the group phase due to the rain. Cassidy set the best lap time across the board and secured pole position. He was able to control the uneventful race at will, as none of his rivals had an answer to his pace. With a remarkable lead of 7.126 seconds, he won ahead of the two Porsche drivers Pascal Wehrlein (2nd place) and Antonio Felix da Costa (3rd place).

"This weekend is a huge highlight"
The 30-year-old was emotional after the race: "This weekend is a huge highlight. I am very proud of our boys," he praised his team. "I am simply proud that we came back like this today. Our pace was incredible"
Cassidy and Jaguar in general have had a difficult few months. He hasn't won a race since Berlin 2024 more than one year ago. His team-mate Mitch Evans had surprisingly won the season opener in Sao Paulo, but has since stumbled just as much with the Jaguar I-Type 7 as Cassidy. "At the end of last season there were so many victories that probably should have been ours. They just never happened. It feels like we have been waiting for this forever. It's the kind of thing you think about when you're in the last few rounds", he continued.

Ironically, the win comes in the very week that it was announced that Cassidy is likely to leave Jaguar TCS Racing at the end of the season. Jaguar's aim was therefore to offer him a competitive package for Shanghai, which they achieved. It remains to be seen whether Jaguar will be able to be further up the field in the remaining races. The twelfth of 16 races in the current season is scheduled for 21 June in Jakarta.
