As the actual championship leader, Jaguar driver Nick Cassidy has the opportunity to be crowned Formula E Champion 2024 ahead of schedule on Saturday. e-Formula.news looks at the scenarios under which a decision could be made as early as the first race of the double-header in the British capital.

On a race day in Formula E, a driver can score a maximum of 29 points: 25 for winning the race, plus a further three points for pole position and one for the fastest race lap in the top ten. In order to avoid being caught on Sunday, Cassidy would therefore have to finish Saturday with a 30-point lead. As he is travelling to London with a twelve-point lead, that would be entirely conceivable.

In any case, he must finish ahead of his closest rivals Mitch Evans and Pascal Wehrlein - both of whom are equal second and third on points. Due to the large number of constellations, it is easier to start with the circumstances under which Cassidy cannot become Formula E champion ahead of time.

Since Cassidy has to extend his lead by at least 18 points, he can only clinch the title if he finishes on the podium on Saturday. If he finishes third, he still needs the bonus points for pole position. Second place or a win could be enough for an early title win even without extra points.

Not in Cassidy's hands alone

In any case, the competition must also "play along" for the title to be decided on Saturday: Should Evans or Wehrlein finish in the top four in the race, the decision is automatically postponed - even in the event of a Cassidy victory from pole position with the fastest race lap.

The same applies in the event that Antonio Felix da Costa achieves another race win, Cassidy does not finish second and simultaneously scores all bonus points. Even if Oliver Rowland or Jean-Eric Vergne win from pole position and set the fastest race lap, Cassidy cannot celebrate the title on Saturday under any circumstances.

Should Cassidy start from pole position and finish second at the end of the race, five points would be enough for Evans or Wehrlein to postpone the decision. This would be possible in the race with 7th or 8th place in conjunction with the bonus point for the fastest race lap.

Tension until the end?

If Cassidy finishes second without pole position or third from pole position, a single point for Evans or Wehrlein would be enough to postpone the decision - unless Cassidy also sets the fastest race lap. In this case, the duo with the same number of points would need two championship points, i.e. a pole position or ninth place, to postpone the title fight.

A final decision on the drivers' championship is therefore only possible under certain conditions. For the sake of excitement, fans should hope that Cassidy does not succeed in doing so on Saturday.

Find out in this article under which conditions an early decision in the teams' and manufacturers' standings is possible.
