Maserati is withdrawing from Formula E. As the well-informed colleagues at Il Messaggero report, the decision has been made by the Italian manufacturer: After three years, it's over. Citroen is likely to take over for the Stellantis Group next season and continue to work with the MSG Racing team.
Maserati's involvement in Formula E began in December 2022 with the official pre-season test drives at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia. For season 9, the "Trident" teamed up with the newly renamed Monaco Sports Group (MSG), formerly Venturi, and fielded Max Günther and Edo Mortara.
Since then, a lot has happened within the Stellantis Group. The Maserati sports car brand is to focus on GT racing with combustion engines in future. Instead, group sister brand Citroen is likely to take over in the all-electric Formula E championship from the upcoming twelfth season and continue the collaboration with MSG.
Stellantis wants to compete with 2 brands in future
According to our information, at least two Stellantis brands are set to compete in Formula E in the medium term. Opel could join Citroen for the first Gen4 season (2026/27). Whether the German brand will take over from DS Automobiles or even appear as a third Stellantis brand remains to be seen.
What is becoming increasingly likely: Penske and DS are likely to part ways in the Gen4 era. As a result, Stellantis is likely to acquire its own team licence in Formula E for the first time - the one that McLaren is vacating. The French manufacturer confirmed this in a job advertisement a few days ago.
For Maserati, this Sunday is therefore the last race in Formula E for the time being. Stoffel Vandoorne is up to score some good points from seventh on the grid to secure at least eighth place overall in the championship for his team. Seventh place (Andretti) seems unrealistic with a 27-point deficit. In its three Formula E seasons, Maserati has taken three E-Prix victories - twice with Günther and most recently with Vandoorne in Tokyo.
