What has been rumoured for several months is now official: Opel will be competing with a works team in Formula E from the coming season. This was announced by Opel CEO Florian Huettl together with Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E, at a press conference in Madrid, which was also attended by e-Formula.news. This means that Stellantis will be competing with its own team for the first time in the history of the racing series.

Opel will be racing in Formula E from the 2026/27 season! The brand from Rüsselsheim will compete in the electric racing series at the start of the Gen4 era under the name Opel GSE Formula E Team. The abbreviation GSE stands for "Grand Sport Electric", the Opel sub-brand for sporty electric vehicles. Opel Head of Motorsport Jörg Schrott has been announced as the future team boss.

The Stellantis Group brand thus succeeds DS Automobiles in the electric racing series, which announced a day earlier that it would be focussing its sponsorship on other sports in the future. After DS (2015 to 2026), Maserati (2023 to 2025) and Citroen (since 2025), the Group is now placing its fourth brand in the electric racing series. Unlike these brands, however, Opel will not act as a drive supplier to an existing team, but will launch its own team. This means that twelve teams will start in the Gen4 era, as Porsche is expanding its commitment to two works teams.

Opel is not entirely inexperienced in all-electric racing: The brand has already been running an electric junior rally series for five years with the ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup. Opel now wants to build on this in Formula E. Previously, Opel was also active in touring car and formula racing for a long time: Formula Opel had its own junior racing series, and Opel also supplied engines for Formula 3. In addition, the brand also competed in the DTM for a long time.

Huettl: "New milestone for Opel"

"Participation in Formula E marks a new milestone for Opel on the road to an electric future," says Opel CEO Florian Huettl. "The launch of Gen4 race cars in Formula E starting next season is exactly the right time for us to enter this exciting all-electric racing circus."

"Our Opel GSE Formula E Team will showcase what our brand stands for: German engineering, bold design and electrifying performance - characteristics that apply equally to the all-electric Opel GSE models such as the Mokka GSE and soon the new Corsa GSE."

"We are delighted to welcome Opel as a new works team in Formula E," said Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds. "As a strong German brand with outstanding technical expertise and a fresh, bold image, Opel brings a long, eventful motorsport history and at the same time new dynamism to the competitive Opel field. Opel's commitment also demonstrates the importance of Formula E for global car manufacturers in the transition to electromobility.

"What began five years ago with the founding of the first all-electric one-make rally cup is now culminating in participation in the FIA World Championship," adds Jörg Schrott, Opel Head of Motorsport and Team Principal of Opel's future Formula E team.

Opel also wants to contribute its expertise to the development of the Gen4 drive from Stellantis. The new team will make its first public appearance and announce further news at the official Gen4 presentation, which will take place in April at the Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet in the south of France.
