A few days ago, the DS Penske Formula E team announced its driver duo for the 2025-26 season: Taylor Barnard and Maximilian Günther will take the wheel for the US team and the French manufacturer next season. No longer required are the services of Jean-Eric Vergne, who was announced shortly afterwards as a driver for the new Citroen Racing team. This marks the end of a partnership in Formula E that lasted eight seasons and made history in the racing series.

"I would like to thank the only double champion in Formula E, with whom it has been a great pleasure to work for eight seasons," said Eugenio Franzetti, head of DS Performance, in his farewell address to his long-time driver. "Jean-Eric's knowledge and commitment have made an enormous contribution to everything we have achieved as a brand. This incredibly productive collaboration between JEV and DS Automobiles will certainly write an important chapter in the history of Formula E."

The 2015 Beijing E-Prix, the season opener of Season 2, was Vergne's first race for DS. The Frenchman had entered Formula E in the third race of the first season for Andretti and moved to Virgin Racing after the season, which entered into a technical partnership with DS Automobiles.

However, the race was not very successful for Vergne: an ill-timed full-course yellow knocked him out of the points and he finished the race in 12th place.

Things went much better for Vergne at his home race in Paris in 2016: he finished on the podium for the first time in his seventh race for DS. 24 more podium finishes for the brand were to follow.

The following race in Berlin was his first pole position as a DS driver. He achieved this a total of ten times in his Formula E career with DS Automobiles. He finished fifth in the race.

The chapter between DS and Vergne ended for the time being at the 2016 London E-Prix. Vergne took his second DS podium in the first round of the double-header and switched to the new Techeetah team, which used customer drives from Renault, for the following season.

A good two years later, at the 2018 Diriyah E-Prix, Techeetah drove with DS drives for the first time. The comeback of the combination of Vergne and DS Automobiles worked very well: the Frenchman, reigning Formula E champion, was on his way to victory.

However, a drive-through penalty for using too much power dropped him back to second place. However, it was clear that Vergne and DS Techeetah were hot contenders for the title.

It would take until the 2019 Sanya E-Prix for Vergne to celebrate his first victory as a DS driver. He won ahead of pole-setter Oliver Rowland and Antonio Felix da Costa.

At the 2019 Bern E-Prix, the Frenchman then took a huge step towards defending his title with pole position and a race win. With 28 points, he extended his lead over Lucas di Grassi to 32 points.

Seventh place at the 2019 season finale in New York City was enough for Vergne to win his second Formula E title. An achievement that no other driver has managed to date. DS Techeetah won the team championship title for the first time.

The 2019-20 season was characterised by the pandemic and six races in Berlin. Vergne won Berlin race number 4 and secured the optimum points total of 29 points in a race for the first and so far only time in his Formula E career: Victory, pole position and fastest lap in the race.

As it was also the first one-two victory for DS in Formula E, it was a disappointment: team-mate Antonio Felix da Costa became the drivers' champion, but DS Techeetah defended its title in the team classification.

Vergne was unable to build on these results in the following 2021 season: although he won the 2021 Rome E-Prix, his 10th place in the overall standings was the worst result of his Formula E career.

He was even denied a victory in 2022: second places in Rome, Berlin and Jakarta (photo) were to remain his best results of the season. Nevertheless, he finished fourth in the final standings.

Same manufacturer, new team: From 2023, Vergne competed for the DS Penske team. However, he only managed 12th place at the season opener in Mexico.

Things went better in Hyderabad: Vergne took the first victory for Penske since Season 2. What nobody realised at the time was that it would be his last win for DS Automobiles in Formula E.

Two weeks later in Cape Town, the Frenchman came close once again, but lost the victory to his former team-mate Felix da Costa in the Porsche shortly before the finish line.

The final highlight for Vergne at DS came at the 2025 Shanghai E-Prix: with an overtaking manoeuvre in the final chicane, the Frenchman secured second place behind his team-mate Max Günther. The first double victory for Penske and the second for DS Automobiles in Formula E.

The partnership between Vergne and DS Automobiles came to an end at the 2025 London E-Prix. The result: eight seasons, 113 races, one drivers' title, two team titles, six race wins, two double victories, 25 podiums, ten pole positions and 847 points.
